The PTE (Pearson Test of English)Academic exam is a computer-based test that evaluates your English proficiency across four skills: Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the PTE exam pattern:
 
PTE Exam Structure
The PTE Academic exam consists of three main parts: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening.
The test is designed to evaluate your English language skills in an integrated way, meaning each section may involve multiple skills at once.
The total duration of the exam is about 3 hours, and it is divided into the following sections:
1. Speaking & Writing (77–93 minutes)
This section assesses both speaking and writing skills, and it is broken down into the following tasks:
A. Personal Introduction (Optional)
• Duration: 1 minute
• You are asked to introduce yourself and briefly talk about your background and experiences. This section is not scored but is sent to institutions as part of your application.
B. Read Aloud
• Duration: 30-40 seconds per item
• You read a short text aloud. Your ability to pronounce words clearly and fluently is assessed.
C. Repeat Sentence
• Duration: 30-40 seconds per item
• You will hear a sentence, and you must repeat it exactly as you heard it. This tests your ability to remember and reproduce spoken English.
D. Describe Image
• Duration: 40 seconds per item
• You will see an image (chart, graph, map, or picture) and describe it in detail. This assesses your ability to organize your thoughts and speak clearly on a specific topic.
E. Re-tell Lecture
• Duration: 60 seconds per item
• You will listen to a short lecture and then summarize it in your own words. This tests your listening and speaking skills as well as your ability to convey information accurately.
F. Answer Short Question
• Duration: 10 seconds per item
• You will hear a short question and must provide a short, accurate answer. It assesses your comprehension and ability to respond quickly.
G. Summarize Written Text
• Duration: 10 minutes for 1 task
• You will read a passage and write a summary of it in 1 sentence. This tests your writing skills and your ability to condense information.
H. Essay Writing
• Duration: 20 minutes
• You are asked to write an essay on a given topic (typically academic or general interest). Your ability to organize and present your ideas clearly, as well as your grammar and vocabulary usage, will be evaluated.
2. Reading (32–41 minutes)
This section evaluates your ability to understand written texts in English. The tasks in the Reading section include the following:
A. Multiple Choice, Choose Single Answer
• Duration: 1-2 questions
• You are given a passage and must answer a multiple-choice question by selecting the correct option.
B. Multiple Choice, Choose Multiple Answers
• Duration: 1-2 questions
• Similar to the previous task, but this time you may need to choose more than one correct answer.
C. Re-order Paragraphs
• Duration: 2-3 questions
• You will see a set of sentences in random order. You need to rearrange the sentences to form a coherent paragraph.
D. Fill in the Blanks (Reading)
• Duration: 2-3 questions
• You will be given a passage with missing words, and you need to select the correct words from a drop-down list to complete the passage.
3. Listening (45–57 minutes)
This section evaluates your ability to understand spoken English in academic and everyday contexts. The tasks in the Listening section include the following:
A. Summarize Spoken Text
• Duration: 10 minutes
• You will listen to a recording of a lecture or conversation and write a summary of it in your own words. This tests both listening and writing skills.
B. Multiple Choice, Choose Single Answer
• Duration: 1-2 questions
• You will listen to an audio recording and select the correct answer from a set of multiple-choice options.
C. Multiple Choice, Choose Multiple Answers
• Duration: 1-2 questions
• Similar to the previous task, but you will need to select multiple correct answers.
D. Fill in the Blanks (Listening)
• Duration: 2-3 questions
• You will listen to an audio recording with missing words, and you need to fill in the blanks with the correct words.
E. Highlight Correct Summary
• Duration: 1-2 questions
• You will listen to an audio recording and choose the summary that best reflects the content of the recording.
F. Select Missing Word
• Duration: 1-2 questions
• You will listen to a short audio clip and select the word or phrase that completes the recording.
G. Highlight Incorrect Words
• Duration: 1-2 questions
• You will listen to an audio clip and spot any incorrect words in the transcript. You need to mark the words that do not match the audio.
H. Write from Dictation
• Duration: 3-4 questions
• You will listen to a sentence and write it exactly as you hear it. This assesses your listening and writing accuracy.
 
           4. PTE Scoring System
                • Scores Range: PTE Academic is scored on a scale of 10–90, with 10 being the lowest and 90 being the highest.
                • The scores are reported as a single overall score, along with individual scores for Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening.
                • Score Report: You will receive your score report within 5 business days. Institutions can see your scores and use them to evaluate your English proficiency.
                • Breakdown: Your score report will include:
                  o Overall Score
                    o Scores for each skill: Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening
                o Communicative Skills: This includes your ability to use grammar, vocabulary, fluency, pronunciation, and spelling.
                o Enabling Skills: These measure your skills in pronunciation, oral fluency, grammatical range and accuracy, spelling, and vocabulary.       
5. Test Duration
The total duration of the PTE Academic exam is approximately 3 hours, but the actual testing time can vary slightly depending on the task length and the test center’s schedule.
6. Score Validity– 2 years
